      <image:title>Projects - LAC+USC Medical Center - LAC+USC Medical Center</image:title>
<image:caption>This project was born as a result of the 1994 Northridge earthquake and the damage sustained by the original building. Designed in 1998, construction began two years later. The goal was to increase patient bed capacity while replacing the damaged hospital. The project was ambitious and had an aggressive timeline with target completion in 2008. The biggest challenge was the tenant improvement in the Acute Care wing committed to in 2005, which was close to the deadline for opening the new hospital. It was extremely critical to ensure that this wing of the hospital was safe for patient care. Vertical door handles, tamper resistant light fixtures, guarded sprinkler heads, and stainless-steel enclosures for sharp containers, were all careful considerations that had to be made while redesigning the new wing. The end result was a modern new hospital that provided a safe environment for the patients needing special services from the facility.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The goal of this project was to provide a modern facility both in design and functionality for child birth and education while increasing the number of deliveries and capacity of the hospital. The end product was a three-story pavilion with 4 new operating rooms, NICU, labor rooms, postpartum room accompanied by a three-story education center with conference rooms, offices, and class rooms. The biggest challenge was providing state of the art operating rooms with enough space for the surgeons while keeping the desired design.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Twin Cities Community Hospital: Guarding Unit - Twin Cities Community Hospital: Guarding Unit</image:title>
<image:caption>The goal of this project was to design a guarding medical unit with a private entrance that provided access to the hospital without compromising the safety of both the patients and facility staff. This included access to the facility by pedestrians as well as loading and unloading of patients by vehicle. The guarding unit also included a 24/7 security desk with protective glass and a nurse station for patient monitoring. Additional safety considerations were included in the design. Steel plating inside the exterior walls to prevent tampering, security bars on all exterior windows, lavatory skirts, sharp container lock boxes, sprinkler head guards, etc. At the conclusion of the project, the result was a guarding unit that enabled the staff to provide uncompromising medical services to inmates without having to compromise their safety.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Good Samaritan Hospital: HVAC Upgrade - Good Samaritan Hospital: HVAC Upgrade</image:title>
<image:caption>This project included the replacement of the air handler in the basement and a supply fan located on the second floor. New work included a raised platform on the roof for each of the air handlers and chillers, plus all the electrical sub-panels and disconnects serving the new equipment. All design and preparation of the construction documents for submittal and approval had to be finished and approved before the existing failing equipment became non-operational. Despite all of the new equipment being installed on the roof of the building where it would not be visible, one of the goals of the project was to provide a clean, linear layout of the air handler, units, chillers, piping / ducts, and supports so that the equipment would not only be easily accessible during maintenance, but also visually pleasing. Often, HVAC and electrical equipment is seen as a necessary evil that is not part of the design language of a building, but I’m really pleased with how much effort went into ensuring that this project was both functional and as aesthetically pleasing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Surveying for this project proved to be a challenge. Gathering information of every nook and corner, anticipating how the new hospital would blend in with the remodel of the existing hospital, translating the gathered information on paper and conveying this to our consultants and contractors to achieve the desired design would not be possible with a traditional approach. So, the approach for this project was having on site AoR and consultants with the capability of creating construction documents for submittal to OSHPD and approval. The final result was a building that blends and fits into the architectural vernacular of California Mission Revival architecture while still achieving the functional goals of the medical facility.</image:caption>
